Subject: [!] Info Mac Archives back online!
Hi all,
Finally. We are back. Sumex-aim is again serving the info-mac archives to
the net. Both gopher and FTP are up and running.
We lost a total of 23 submissions (not many, eh?). We lost none of the
files that were published in any info-mac digests! All the posters will be
getting a short mail message informing them of a lost file. These mail
message have already been sent.
Have at it folks. Much thanks to our sys admin, mike, for helping us out
on this one, and Chris at wuarchive for providing an up to date copy of
the info-mac archives!
Cheers,
Gordon (one of the moderators here at info-mac)

Subject: [*] BeamWars 2.3.2 update
This file is a refresher version of BeamWars. The latest version is
BeamWars 2.3.2 revision 1a. This version replaces version 2.3.2
revision 1. This is the first revision made to the game since 1992.
The only major difference since the last version is that the computer
opponents are much smarter making the game harder.
This game is similar to the old arcade game called Tron. The game
consists of 4 beams that maneuver aorund the screen. The last one to
die gets a bonus. This goes on for a certain length of time and the
leader in points at the end of the time is the winner. This game has
great graphics, smooth animation and a great soundtrack.
BeamWars requires an '020 or better CPU and a 13" monitor with at
least 16 colors or shades of gray. It looks best in 256-color mode.
BeamWars runs best under System 7, but will also work with System 6.
System 6.0.2 or better is required for sounds to work.
This game is shareware and has a $15 registration fee allow though
there is no "copy-protections" in place. There are no differences in
the registered and non-registered versions.
The author of the game is: Steve Crutchfield
(stevec@jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu) and is a product of Polaris Software.
Suggestions are welcome for the next version which is scheduled to be
out by the end of the summer.
If there are any problems with this file, email:

Subject: [*] Decor 2.0
This is the latest version of my shareware utility, Decor. It allows
you to display a picture in the background instead of the dull desktop
pattern.
Version 2.0 is a complete rewrite and offers a bunch of new features:
- GIF and Quicktime JPEG image recognition
- Change images automatically at regular intervals
- Pick files from a folder, at random or in sequence
- Memory footprint varies dynamically when you load/dispose of pictures.
- and many more! The list is too long to be shown here.
Requires System 7 and 32 bit Quickdraw. $5 Shareware.
Try it, you won't regret it!
To the archiver : this file should replace older versions of Decor.

MacTCP Netswitch 1.0.1
Copyright 1994, University of Notre Dame, Office of University
Computing
Written by David Walton, David.Walton.10@nd.edu
MacTCP Netswitch is an extension that swaps in a MacTCP Prep file from
a group of pre-configured prep files, based on the status of your
AppleTalk connection. It chooses a prep file based on a) whether a
network is connected; and b) the name of the AppleTalk zone you are
in. It doesn't require the user to reboot after choosing a
configuration file; the correct file is chosen automatically at
startup. It will also resolve aliases to a file server, making it
possible to store some prep files on a centrally-maintained file
server; aliases may be mixed with actual files, allowing a single set
of prep files for both on- and off-network configurations. Although
written for PowerBook users, it is potentially useful for anyone who
moves a machine from location to location. It can also be used to
configure any group of machines using the same parameters by
distributing an alias to a central server.
MacTCP Netswitch 1.0.1 replaces version 1.0b1. Version 1.0.1 adds
support for resolving alias files within the Prep files folder. It
also corrects some bugs and adds better support for System 6.0 users.
It requires a Macintosh Plus or better, System 6.0.3 or later, and
AppleTalk version 53.
This package should include five items:
1. This README file.
2. The MacTCP Netswitch extension.
3. An installation instruction example/template called "User
instructions."
4. The MacTCP Netswitch Guide, in Microsoft Word 4.0 format.
5. The same guide, in MacWrite II format.
This software is provided free of charge. You may re-distribute it,
but please read the distribution restrictions in the accompanying
Guide before you do so.

macro commands to Excel that can be used to speak a single cell, an entire

General description
===================
Exercise Log is a Hypercard-based activities log that lets you store
information about each workout you do in an unlimited number of sports.
It offers an attractive and useful middle ground between paper-based logs
(in which you have to do all the tallying, etc. yourself) and spread-sheet
models (which tend to be too rigid for free-form information entry).
For each workout, there are fields for date, sport, workout-type, effort,
distance, time, pace, course-name, details, and description, weather, and
shoes used (or inline skates, or bike equipment, etc.).
In addition, your resting pulse rate and weight for the day can be entered.
The log will automatically calculate pace, and add up distances and number
of workouts in a week or year.
Shortcuts allow you to quickly enter new workout info for standard
and to navigate easily between different workouts and sections in the log.
Workouts can be displayed in a convenient weekly overview format, or can
be selected to be listed in a tally based on criteria you specify
(including effort-level, sport, workout type, or equipment).
Import and export facilities are provided to move data between logs and
to and from data files that can be used in Excel, etc. Thus, if you already
have an on-line exercise data base, you need not type all the data in anew.
In addition, rather than relying on Hypercard's somewhat anemic charting
capabilities, you can just export the relevant data and chart it any way
you like in a spreadsheet program.
A detailed Help section explains all options and features.
This stack requires Hypercard 2.0 or above, but will run best in 2.1
or above. It uses the Times and Palatino fonts, and has been tested
on most common setups. It is shareware, which means that if you decide
to use it (after evaluation), you are required to send me $8. This is
significantly less than most other software exercise logs, and about
equivalent to the cost of most paper-based logs, such as those produced
by Runner's World and Bicycling. I am not expecting to get rich off
this, just to get back a little for all the hours I put into perfecting
this log instead of pursuing my graduate studies :-(
Address comments, criticisms, suggestions for improvement, etc. to:
maurits@husc.harvard.edu, and send the shareware fee to:

The FKEY is a resource of ID=8. If you don't know how to install an FKEY, then

Subject: [*] Folder Watcher 2.0.3
Folder Watcher 2.0.3
$20 shareware
Folder Watcher is a faceless background application that keeps an eye on an
unlimited number of folders on your Macintosh, or a remote Macintosh or
server. If the contents of any of these folders ever change, Folder Watcher
will respond by showing an alert, playing a system beep or a custom sound,
writing to a log file, executing an AppleScript script, or any combination
of these.
Unlike other similar utilities, Folder Watcher:
* Does not patch any traps so it is more compatible with your other programs.
* Allows you to keep an eye on an infinite number of folders.
* Does not require a reboot after adding new folders and will work between
reboots.
* Does not require that the target folder is empty (ie: some other
utilities alert you whenever an item is placed in an empty folder but then
never again as long as a single item is in the folder! yech!)
* Uses very little RAM.
Folder Watcher requires System 7. Although it does not require a network,
it is most useful when used on one. Folder Watcher is 32 bit clean and is
68040 compatible.
AppleScript 1.1 is recommended but not required.

Subject: [*] HyperCard 2.2 Help
Here is HyperCard 2.2 Help, a small text-displying app which
documents "hidden" or non-obvious features of HyperCard, plus
just about everything about HyperText, for version 2.2.
This is *much*, *much* better and far more painstakingly put
together than my earlier HC-Help and HT-Help DAs, which it
replaces. By study and testing I have found *numerous* errors
in the HyperCard and HyperTalk manuals, and some in the Help and
Reference stacks as well. I should like to think that this Help
app is thus *more* reliable than those, so I hope people will
want to take a look at it. Whether you have bought HyperCard 2.2,
and need to know what the *real* facts are, or whether you have
come across your copy of HyperCard 2.2 in some other way and do
not have the manuals, this app should help you. It also answers
a number of FAQs (and in future I will try to incorporate more).
I *will* try to maintain this so please email me suggestions.
This app is a "Misebirakasu" (an app by Christopher K. Thomas),
which means that you have the additional benefit of being able to
Find and Copy text from it.
You can also modify the text yourself to suit your own needs
(using ResEdit, for example), but please do *not* redistribute
a modified version to anyone.
Stuffed and BinHexed; expands to 216K, runs in 150K.

MacBreadboard is a Digital Trainer/Simulator for the Macintosh.
It uses and incredibly originial interface in which users actually manipulate
chips and wires, NOT individual gates. It runs in color
or black & white.
System Requirements: Mac 512ke (Runs on all Macs built since '86) and all
Operating systems since 4.1 (including System 7 and the PowerPC)
MacBreadboard received a FOUR STAR review in MacWorld Dec '92 and
a Product Excellence award from Technology and Learning for the

We also want to announce that our Windows(tm) port is complete. WinBreadboard
requires Windows 3.1 and is shipping now!

Subject: [*] micro-world.hqx
Hello,
MicroWorld is a molecular display program for three dimensional
model renderings (Dreiding, Ball&Stick, Space Fill) from atomic
space coordinates, e.g. from x-ray data, databases, energy
optimization programs, and so on - just look at the included slide
show to see what it is all about. It features powerful functions which
are, so far, quite rare with other programs of this kind:
* Antialiased sticks and mixed model lines
* Depth cueing: impression of three dimensional depth by a
change of the brightness of the model parts with increasing distance
to the observer.
* Transparent space fill models.
* Up to three different model types in one model.
* Import of a background picture and optional cast of a model shadow
onto it.
* Colorizing of distinct model parts.
* Alignment of the model to a point, a bond, or a plane.
* Display of a color legend for element colors.
* High quality printouts.
* Mathematical coprocessor not necessarily needed.
* Optimized for 256 colors.

Subject: [*] Odyssey Patch
After getting to a point in Odyssey where I could make no further progress, I
decided to poke around in the game data files. They're not too hard to reverse
engineer, and after a bit I was able to figure out why I was stuck: two
important keys that I had, were designated to open inaccessable sections of
blank wall 1 square away from the doors I had to get through to proceed.
Correcting these deficiencies has allowed me to get on with the game and make
much further progress. I still think the game is interesting, I wish the author
had spend more time getting someone else to alpha test it before posting.
Anyway, here's a patch that will let you all get in on the fun. All the changes
that are needed are in the file NPCs.dat, so here is a Stuffit/Binhex of that
file. Rename the original to something else for backup and then put this in the
game folder. Unfortunately, the fix will only show up in new games after you
install this file, so you'll have to run through the game from the start again,
it really doesn't take too long when you know what you're doing.
The two keys I have patched are the second grey key in the sewers and the key
you get from the goblin archer in the cobweb room in the tombs. I also patched
the teleport wand that the shopkeeper sells so that it doesn't imbed you in
the city wall, though I have no idea what behaviour it was supposed to have.
I can't guarantee these are the only keys with problems, but I've been making
slow but steady progress since making the patch.
Happy dungeoning,

infects the Finder when the computer is next started up. The infected
Finder is then capable of infecting other applications.
When triggered, INIT-9403 attempts to destroy the startup hard disk by
writing data over it. INIT-9403 also attempts to overwrite the disk
information on each connected hard drive larger than 16 megabytes. If
the virus is triggered and runs unchecked, the startup disk will be
essentially unrecoverable. Non-startup disks may be recoverable by
some utility programs.
SAM Virus Clinic can repair files infected by INIT-9403; however, if
possible, replace rather than repair System files and applications
infected by INIT-9403.
UPDATE REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS
Owners of SAM Version 3.5 and SAM Version 3.0 can instantly update the
repair capabilities of SAM to recognize the INIT-9403 virus by
downloading the updated SAM Virus Definition File available on the
Symantec Bulletin board (503) 484-6699 (2400 baud) or (503) 484-6669
(9600 baud). The definition is also available on CompuServe, America
Online or Applelink. Once you have downloaded the virus definitions
file, you should copy it into your System folder, replacing the
current SAM Virus Definition File with the file just downloaded. SAM
Intercept and SAM Virus Clinic will then be able to repair infected
files that were not permanently damaged by the virus.
If you don't own a modem and cannot download the virus definitions
file, you can receive a disk with repair capabilities for $12.00 (plus
sales tax where applicable). To order, please call Customer Service
at (800) 441-7234 in the US and Canada.
To Update SAM manually for detection of INIT-9403, complete the
following steps:
(Note: this is not necessary if you have installed the new virus
definition file)
FOR SAM 3.5:
Step 1:
Open SAM Virus Clinic. From the Options menu in version 3.
of SAM Virus Clinic select "Virus Definitions".
Select "Add Resource"
Now enter the following information:

Offset: Greater or Equal to 256
From: START
Resource Type: Sys6
Resource ID: Equal to 2
Size: Greater or Equal to 940
Verification: EB96
(Check: 94F9)
After you've entered the above information correctly, you will be able
to click "DONE" and the virus definition will be added.
If you encounter difficulty and require assistance, you may contact
Symantec Technical Support at (503) 465-8440.

Dear Administrator,
Apparently someone (not I, the author) had submitted my game ("The

use Color Quickdraw without checking properly for its existence first,
causing a crash in machines not equipped with that facility. I have taken
the advice of one of your administrators, Jonathan Brecher, and have
created a new and improved version of The Odyssey which performs this check
correctly.
If there are any problems, please let me know. The code I used to
make the check was lifted directly from the

Mac fantasy role-playing! This long neglected genre on our favorite

this a fascinating gaming experience. The shareware fee is $25.00. A color

This is a posting for Adam Wildavsky (adamw@panix.com).
Please see his description bellow
-- Vinko
Vinko Enterprises, Oakville, Ontario, Canada, vinko@applelink.apple.com
TTidyApplication is a C++ class for software developers who use MacApp,
Apple's object oriented application framework. Its purpose is to help
locate all the TObject descendants which a MacApp application has allocated
but not freed.
TTidyApplication is intended to be easier to use than the "Leaks" dcmd. It also
works in MacApp 3.1 where "Leaks" is ineffective.
In order to use the code you'll need MacApp 3.0.1 with Steve Jasik's "The
Debugger" or MacApp 3.1 (I used b1) with either The Debugger or Mike Lockwood's
"VoodooMonkey" debugger. VoodooMonkey is available on Apple's "Tool Chest"
edition of its monthly developer CD.

Please replace this with the previous version (Vol III) I uploaded on 2/25/94:
The problem was when I e-mailed the textures (vols I-IV) to sumex and UMich

to describe the file contained ":-steve" at the end. When a utility such
as StuffIt Expander tried to decode the binhex file it found the colon
character before my name and assumed that it was the start of the binhex
segment. But the text immediately following my name wasn't binhex code, so
the decoding failed. To fix the problem, I removed the colon from this
message and everything should work fine.

This is a fix to the Turnaround Textures. Apparently, when you use a colon
as the first character on a line, some utilities get confused. For example
Ken Sayward <sayward@vsdec.nl.nuwc.navy.mil> wrote, 'When I downloaded one
of your texture files from sumex (in binhex 4.0 format), the header
information you provided to describe the file contained ":-steve" at the
end. When I tried to decode the binhex (with Stuffit Deluxe), it found the
colon character before your name, and assumed that was the start of the

immediately following your name wasn't binhex code, so the decoding failed.
When I removed the colon from your signature, everything worked fine.'
